The results of research by researchers at the Athlone Institute of Technology (AIT), Ireland, showed coconut oil can be a natural antibiotic to fight the germs that cause tooth decay.
AIT research team tested the ability of natural coconut oil and coconut oil are added enzymes to fight Streptococcus bacteria normally present in the mouth.
According to research, coconut oil which has been modified by the enzymes have a greater ability to resist the growth of most bacteria Streptococcus. Including Streptococcus mutation, acid-producing bacteria that became one of the main causes of tooth decay.
Additional testing by the research team showed that coconut oil AIT with enzyme treatments also harm the fungus Candida albicans can cause canker sores.
Dr Damien Brady AIT Biology Research Center, who led the study, said the addition of coconut oil with a low concentration of the enzyme treatment on dental care products will help fight dental caries, dental public health problems commonly experienced by children and adults.
"With the increased resistance to antibiotics, the findings are important to direct attention to new ways to fight bacterial infections," he said at the official website AIT.
